Let’s kick things off with an appetizer, OK?
Found that randomly via one of the millions of e-newsletters I’m trying to unsubscribe to. He’s a local comedian who produces an itinerant variety show that I’d like to catch soon. Anyway, here’s the video I really meant to open with:
That’s a video of legendary techno duo Orbital performing live at the Glastonbury Music Festival in the UK. Updating one of their classic hits, they’re joined by Mel C of another legendary UK band, the Spice Girls. Spicy. Get it?
OK it’s a cheeky joke of sorts, but I’m running with it. Add spice. How have things changed?
It’s December 2024, and a lot of things are going to change soon. A new year. A new President. Things are about to get spicy, and probably not in a good way.
But this post isn’t about politics. I love this time of year, not for the frigid cold snap we’re having in Chicago. No, it’s usually because it’s the time of year to reflect on the past year, and most importantly, think about the changes in the year ahead. It’s a time to plan, scheme, hope, build, quit, take the leap, go west (life is peaceful there), dance like no one’s watching, join a commune, start a cult, start a business, download a dating app, delete all those dating apps. You get the idea.
For me, it’s a time of reinvention. I started a cool job a year ago. Then got laid off. That’s OK. I’m more of a startup guy anyway.
By the way, did I mention I’m a huge fan of both Orbital and the Spice Girls? That probably tells you about how old I am. Don’t get me started about the UK in the 80’s was the most creative mashup of musical genres ever. One of my 2025 dreams is to launch and grow an open mic type of variety show, with music, dance, and filled with art. Because we’re gonna need a lot of art to help us navigate these next four years.
OK I lied about the politics stuff.
Happy New Year.
